Who is BIRT?

Brain Injury Resource Team 

The overall purpose of the Brain Injury Resource Team (BIRT) is to provide a district wide coordinated resource team to identify and support students with a brain injury. BIRT will provide consultation to students with a brain injury, their families, and school personnel.


The team will gather information to identify and assess needs with the following objectives:

The Brain Injury Resource Team is made up of Aurora Public School professionals dedicated to assisting people in the district affected by brain injury. BIRT meets monthly to discuss student referrals and their progress, and to discuss issues surrounding brain injury.

The team may consist of:

  • Administrators
  • Athletic Trainers
  • Exceptional Student Service Liaisons
  • General Education Teachers
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physical Therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Registered Nurses
  • Social Workers
  • Special Education Teachers
  • Speech/Language Pathologists
  • Teachers of Visually Impaired
  • Devise and implement strategies to achieve academic and behavioral success
  • Provide school and community resources
  • Educate students, school staff, and families regarding brain injuries through in-services, seminars and professional development
  • Assist with the IEP or 504 process
  • Develop and apply strategies to ease transition challenges

Referral Process

Please have an Aurora Public School team member complete the referral form and email it to one of the above listed contacts. The Brain Injury Resource Team will review it and respond to the school team as soon as possible.
